#1 - post the first.

Every now and again you desperately miss any car you've ever owned...no matter how shitty.

This is my "the more you know" series, I will post from time to time. Obviously these are my opinions, feel free to tell me I'm wrong...I mean I'm not, but you can tell me why you THINK I'm wrong.

Am I supposed to answer with a car I once owned that I now miss?

Truth. Sometimes I seriously consider buying another '80s Cavalier, just because they're slow as fuck and nearly indestructible

not looking for that specifically, no call to action at all. Just thoughts on what makes car people car people. I was cleaning out my cruiser last night and I had pangs of sadness for my 1996 rav4 for some reason.

my doctor said the occasional Pang is normal, but that I should call him if they last more than 4 hours.

Missed my Rav4 last night, something fierce. I called it Yoda, because it was a quirky green teacher of things.

So true... I even miss cars my parents or grandparents had from time to time. My grandad's grey Opala SS, or my dad's dark green Passat TS, which they sold when I was little, always caught my eye, specially when they came to visit and parked their striped fat tire car next tonmy parents' striped, fat tire car.

I have pangs for my 1992 Ford Tempo...even though it was probably the SLOWEST car made.

No, not at all. Just thought I'd share since it's related.

Feel free to use the "You know you're Jalop..." lead in if you like it.

I only sort of miss my '81 Accord. I absolutely, unequivocally miss every other vehicle.

I know Toyota started selling them in '96, but wasn't 1997 the first model year?

My first car was an 86 cavalier. To this day, I did more off roading in that car than I have done in an other vehicle.

Unfortunately, it was finally done in by the worst of road dangers. A 16 year old girl at a stop sign.

no, in fact they made changes between the 96 and 97 MY. This was a custom order from a relative working at Toyota. 5 speed, rear torsen LSD, prototype exhaust, etc. Neat cars.

Hi5! I had an' 87. Nobody ever told me it wasn't supposed to go offroad! I hill-hopped the everloving fuck out of that thing. Oilfield roads, washboards, berms, whatever I threw at it it took. I even got a good bit of air one time and landed on a concrete block. Blew the front passenger tire, nicked the rear passenger wheel, no suspension damage. Tossed the spare on it and drove away

Mine met its untimely demise at the hands of a "friend" I "sold" it to because he was in a pinch. Never made a single payment (on a five hundred dollar car), clogged up the cat and returned it to me with a blown head. Fucker.

And now I miss my 1994 Caprice Classic with the LT1. You can't really beat being sideways in a parking lot covered in snow with 4 friends in the car, all sitting comfortable (put roadmaster seats in it, literally like sitting on a couch).

Yes it is. Cummins, 4X4, 5 speed, very sad.

I miss the Honda Jazz...that I had been learning to drive in. It's funny I've actually almost never spoken about my own car experiences here because I've had painfully little (<5hrs driving before lessons). Now I'm looking for work so I've paused the lessons (fuck unemployment) , but it feels more like an opposite, learning to drive compared to the little driving I had done beforehand. I actually do not really enjoy learning to drive. It's very stressful (it's shocking just how much bad driving is around you, not illegal enough to notice as a passenger but definitely in the driver's seat) and I find it difficult to remeber/action all the things I'm supposed to do in situations that arise. But when my instructor just takes a back seat (I know :P) and things are going smoothly (soon as a mistake occurs it just resets everything to me) it is just SO right. Nailing shifts, intelligent situation management, good hillstart no rollback without handbrake (my best is half an inch back) - infact what amazed me the most was just what a huge part a manual is, of driving. The clutch is where there is such opportunity for finesse. But new cars are TOO QUIET!!! Many times I thought I stalled when I hadn't, it can also be difficult to rev to 1.5k for a launch without looking at the tach.

I could go on forever about all the little things of driving so to summarise: What being a Jalop to me is to appreciate how cars make me feel. We are delightfully simple in the sense we have senses to entice and like control. Which almost any vehicle can provide. Honestly, I've felt giddy in that Honda Jazz that I could barely hear, in stressful conditions, and also with a hawk on my left. I was even giddier before that, taking a Forrester to its honest top speed (3rd hand, managed just over 100mph) on simple roads and just relishing how the car moves and bounces lightly and so so gracefully over bumps. Or doing figure 8s in a carpark of a stadium where I used to work once, never exceeding 20mph. Nothing in the world feels like a car does. Doing ANYTHING. And the fact I could appreciate much of this without having driven, the fact I'll spend hours here just reading about cars I would ache to be in the presense of let alone drive is what being a Jalop is to me. There's nothing else I enjoy that I would spend so much time on NOT experiencing first hand.
